The main focus of these series is to develop an understanding of the tools which I utilize to create the pieces, mainly the exacto knife and vellum paper. Rather than me dictating what it is I want the tools to do, I feel I can achieve much more if I listen to what it is the tools can do best. I consider my approach to this work to be very "surface", yet the deep enjoyment and meaning seems to be found in the act of listening and observing what the piece wants to do and what it has to say upon completion.
My education in graphic design has definitely played a large part in the influence of these pieces. The play involved in the creation of design compositions and the hard edge graphic aesthetic is what I have taken and applied to my current work. I feel that I am starting to develop a close relationship with this medium as it seems to be becoming much easier to understand what it wants me to do. I am curious and excited to see how this process will evolve and hope that I can develop this type of relationship with other mediums.
All pieces are hand pulled over hand cut(or ripped) stencils. I use a lightfast oil alkyd paint on Stonehenge paper which is 100% cotton, acid-free buffered with calcium carbonate to help protect the artwork from contaminated environments.
